Biography
Shirlyn was born in The Island of Pearl, Penang, west of Malaysia, in 1981. Her interests for music started in the early age of four through the choir singing and piano playing.
She was a classically trained pianist and has completed both theory and practical Grade 8 ABRSM. In 2000, she pursued her study in music at the University College Sedaya International (UCSI), Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia, and gained her Diploma certificate in 2002 in classical music performance with a Merit. She also plays the acoustic drums which serves as her second musical instrument. She actively participated in giving charity concerts for the dialysis centres and the old folks’ home through the college’s musical shows. She has leaded the keyboard instrumentalists in a music camp at the Tower of Kuala Lumpur. She has been teaching the piano to gain more experiences at the same time.
Following the twinning programme of this music course, she furthers her study at the Middlesex University, London in 2003 for the undergraduate music programme. She graduated in the summer of 2004 in the BA (Hons) Music with a borderline first class in solo piano recital. During the gap years, she has travelled across the Britain and European countries to absorb the many musical cultures and traditions as her interests in musicology and ethnomusicology.
In the autumn 2006, she enrolled herself to the music postgraduate course at the Middlesex University to further her skills and knowledge for a wider sphere in the aspects of music learning. She has completed her study in January 2008 and will be graduating this summer in MA Music with Merit. She has done her research on learning how students learn music, music professional developments and in the area of special educational needs. This study gave me the privileges and opportunities to learn and work together with the many experienced and professional musicians and lecturers, i.e. Dr Evans, Dr Fribbins, Dr Dack, and etc.
Shirlyn is an enthusiastic, young and open-minded musician who believes that music learning is open for everyone who has the passion and interests in them. She teaches the ways the students learn. She has been successfully teaching the piano in groups and individually since 2001, with students aged ranging from 4 to 63, and some with mild dyslexia and dyspraxia. She has accompanied the choirs, singers and soloists in performances, concerts, charity shows and in the graded examination.
